We bought this ex-police riot van with the intention of converting it into a ‘deluxe’ camper and have got as far as stripping it of the police seats and racking. Unfortunately we’ve realised we aren’t going to find the time to do the renovation work and so are listing it here…
It is an XLWB, extra high 5.2T Iveco Daily with a load capacity of 4.5m length in the rear and (at its current unladen weight) has a 2.3T potential payload.
In addition to the base van fittings, there is a leisure battery and fuse rack under the front seats, a number of 12v sockets in the rear, high-spec air conditioning, and lights running the length of the roof. Originally with 8 seats in the rear (3 doubles still available if wanted), the securing track remains in place.
The van drives beautifully, both in auto and with manual shift.
The MOT/annual test runs to 31 July 2024. The inspector told me the undercarriage was in better than expected condition for its age.
It has a full police service history (38 services) and the last oil service was on 13 June 2023. A new windscreen has been fitted, replacing the strengthened (double thickness) police version which had tape on the edges.
Drawing together the list of things I’d wanted to work on (or have now gotten used to but that others might want to change!):
– There is minor rusting in various places on the bodywork, commensurate with the van’s age; in particular above the windscreen where tape had been used to seal the original (double-thick) police windscreen.
– On start-up there’s a (temporary) warning light for the Tachometer which I understand has to be fitted but I don’t need to use and don’t dare attempt to remove…
– Again on start-up there is (sometimes) a temporary warning light saying ‘Insufficient oil pressure’. This goes off after about 10 seconds. The oil pressure and sensor have been professionally checked and I’m assured there is no problem.
– The grey door cover panels (internal) rattle on rough country roads
