Yep, the housing crisis in the UK has continued to get worse and now a group of self branded Van Lifers are being targeted too by UK Government… Leader Rishi Sunnkit appears to be aiming both barrels at those who choose to live in their vehicles… and has brought some of the most stringent restrictions seen this Millennia to the drivers of the UK!
With ULEZ charges, increases in VED as well as speeding and camera targeting at an all time high for UK motorists. The question is now being asked by these close nit, pseudo exclusive bunch – Is Van Life Dead? And what does this all mean for those of us who are born in the UK and choose to live in converted vans, caravans and campervans?
Well that’s all folks! Van Life is Dead indeed.
It all Begins — Coverage on the BBC One Show!
VanLife is a community which shot to fame this week on a BBC 1 television show called the One Show. The short VT which ran on Mondays night show spoke about a selection of UK motorists who live in vans, yep thats right they live full time, 100% 365 days a year on the road, sleeping in car parks and laybys as well as the odd bit of paid campsites and residential street parking. These motorists are now being focused in on and the way in which they own, rent or register a van is now being examined.
To drive a vehicle on UK roads the vehicle must have valid insurance, be taxed and have a current MOT, to drive a vehicle on the road the driver must have a full UK drivers licence with any specifics (such as LGV, HGV or Motorcycle classes) being obtained.
The ownership of the vehicle is something which Van Lifers have been trying to get around for years, registering a vehicle to family or friends or to an address which they can have access to. Previously services online were available for those who do not have a full UK address but these are now being stopped by UK authorises, likewise registering a camper van to a company address or an address where a mail forwarder has been set up. This is apparently to make UK roads a safer place.
Before you get started with your Van Life reading this Reddit is a good idea.
